Potato Virus Y - PVY

The first symptom of the PVY infection is a whitish coloration in the young leaves. After this, the leaves developed a light mottled color and the typical “vein banding”: dark-green stripes/bands along the veins and light-green tissue in the surroundings.

Necrosis may occur to the veins of plants infected with the more severe types of PVY. Systemic necrosis frequently occurs in cultivars resistant to root knot nematodes. When the lower leaves begin to ripen, veins turn black, followed by plant death and the leaves begin to fall. If the stalk is split longitudinally, areas of black discoloration will be found extending from top to bottom of the plant. If a variety resistant to PVY is infected in the plantbed, or if the infection occurs in the early field stage, it may show weak non-necrotic or mosaic symptoms.

This virus is transmitted from vegetables and weeds to tobacco by migrating aphids. Plantbeds or fields near potato crops, vegetables or weed infested areas should be avoided.

The use of hybrids or cultivars resistant to this strain of virus is the most effective way to prevent damages caused by PVY, but it is also very important to apply insecticides for controlling aphids and insects, which, in addition to transmitting the PVY virus, also spread other tobacco infesting diseases.

There are several good quality and high yield cultivars, resistant to PVY, released by ProfiGen.
