Certified Seed

The cultivars produced and commercialized by ProfiGen are registered in the NCR (National Cultivar Register) and the seed is certified by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa).

Certification is a long process that aims to ensure the genetic purity and quality of seed that is produced for commercialization. It is a procedure that encompasses several steps that start at the origin of the foundation seed used for the production of Certified Seed. Assurance of origin, conformity and integrity of the foundation seed are required for the registration of fields for the production of seed in the MAPA.

Accredited Responsible Technicians (RTs) are in charge of implementing minimum distance and isolation measures between cultivars and parent lines to meet the tobacco Certified Seed production standards.

The follow-up work by the RT, “Roguing” (technique that consists in identifying and removing atypical plants that do not possess the phenotype traits of the variety), and evidence  that the parent plants are free from diseases not allowed in the production  of tobacco seeds, ensure the sanity, integrity and uniformity of all seed lots produced.

Special cares at production, harvest, cleaning and processing, where every step is monitored and controlled, make the entire process traceable, from production to final packaging.

Only seeds that meet the minimum quality standards required by legislation can be commercialized, whilst the data found on the identification label must be based on technical reports issued by laboratories accredited by the MAPA, providing the farmers with high quality and healthy Certified Seeds.

Packaging containing certified tobacco seed is identified by means of a Certification Tag containing information in compliance with pertinent legislation.
